Florida Cricket Club claims victory

The home team won the toss and confidently elected to bat first

The Florida Cricket Club Second XI had a successful outing against the Old Edwardians Cricket Club, when they beat them by six wickets.

The match, which forms part of the 2nd XI Sunday League, took place at the Old Edwardians’ home ground in Houghton. The home team won the toss and confidently elected to bat first, creating the impression that the Florida players will be chasing the ball throughout the match.

Thato Phukujoe ended with bowling figures of 3/27.

But, that did not seem to be the case, as Roeshen Sage took the first wicket in the fourth over, with Thato Phukajoe taking two wickets in the next over, leaving the Old Edwardians on 32/ 3. Unfortunately, four dropped catches in the first eight overs allowed the home team to hang around a bit longer and claw their way to 87 all out in 23 overs. The home team’s captain, Punith Keshav, was the top scorer with 19 runs.

The Florida openers, Syed Fawad and Joshua Petzer were ready to take on the run chase and confidently took to the crease. Syed, who came in to bat without wearing a helmet, entertained the crowd with his shot selections, connecting with all the deliveries and sending them to the boundary. When Joshua lost his wicket on 32, and Syed ran himself out on 34, the game was just about over. Declan Osborn and Simon Mogotsi were the two batters who finished up the game, helping Florida to cruise to victory in only nine overs.

The top performers for Florida on the day were bowlers Thato (3/ 27) and Chowdary Jameel (2/ 2). The batters that shone, were Simon (29 not out) and Syed (34).
