Fundraising fun at Floroma

Money raised will be used to buy equipment for home

Floroma Old Age Home’s annual summer fete transformed the halls into a hive of activity, with promises of delicious food and leisurely browsing.

Visitors to the fete were spoilt for choice with the various stalls offering goods ranging from books, novelties, and handmade goods to a white elephant stall and a pick-a-box table. For those who came hungry, there were boerewors rolls, pancakes, puddings, cakes, cupcakes and curry and rice to choose from.

Joy Marsh, the home’s fundraiser said that she felt this year’s fete was quite successful, and was optimistic that they would be able to raise at least R20 000 for the home. “The money raised at the fete is not used for the day-to-day running of the home – I use it to buy necessities and equipment, such as medicine trolleys for the home,” she said.

The 87-year-old has been involved in the home’s fundraising since 1986 but said that the annual fete is definitely a highlight for her. “I would like to thank the community for supporting us, as well as everyone who donated or sponsored goods for the various tables today. Also a huge thank you to my family members, who are always willing to help me,” she said.

Joy and Jenny Marsh felt the day was fairly successful.

Stephan Ferreira, the founder of Charity Begins with Me, also helped to raise money on the day, by selling cupcakes, curry and rice and cold drinks. “We usually visit the old age home once a month, where we bring cupcakes and visit with the residents for the day. Today, we decided we wanted to do something extra, so we baked cupcakes, prepared curry and rice and sponsored some beverages. We wanted to keep the price as low as possible, to ensure everyone would be able to buy something delicious, in order for us to donate all the proceeds made today to the home,” he said.

Members of two of the local motorcycle clubs – Wicked Wheels and Victory Eagles – also spent part of their day at the fete, showing their support and love for the residents.
