National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day

Make room for holiday leftovers on #NationalCleanOutYourRefrigeratorDay

Get ready with a bucket filled with hot, soapy water and disinfectant, together with a sponge and garbage bag, because 15 November is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.

The timing of this day is perfect, as the holiday season is drawing near, and you need to make room for all the upcoming leftovers. Although this job might be dreaded by many, it is an important task none the less.

The cleaning of the refrigerator is often neglected due to our hectic and busy lifestyles – making it the main reason for the creation of this day. We tend to push back things already in the refrigerator as we put in new food, and forget about it. This usually leads to a surprise or to being found at the back of the shelves.

National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day was created by Whirpool Appliances’ home economists in 1999 to encourage people to clean out their refrigerators in advance of the upcoming holidays. The company even had a toll free hotline offering cleaning tips.

To celebrate today here are some suggestions for cleaning your refrigerator:

– Empty each shelf

– Wipe down the inside of the refrigerator entirely

– Wash the drawers – even underneath

– All expired and mouldy food needs to be thrown away

– If you do not use it anymore, throw it away

– Vacuum condenser coils as well as under the refrigerator

– Shelves need to be restocked with good food

– Enjoy your clean and organised refrigerator.
