Hoo Hoo Fest put the fun into fundraising

Putting the Fun into fundrasing

Even though it was a chilly, overcast morning in Florida, this did not prevent the community from supporting the blockwatch’s fundraising event.

“We want to install some Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in our area, to ensure that it is safer for all our residents. The cameras, which will be monitored offsite by a security company, cost about R26 000 each,” said Leandra van Wyk from Leandra Real Estates.

Cassidy Nortman is also a student at Fusion Dance studio.

The Hoo Hoo Fest was the perfect way to raise the funds while ensuring the community had fun, according to Leandra. “We sold 1 000 raffle tickets for R200 each, thus giving one lucky ticket holder a one in a 1 000 chance to become the proud owner of a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle,” she said.

The festival was also attended by some of the major emergency services, the local security companies, the police and the City of Johannesburg’s Fire Department. The big red fire engine was a definite hit with young and old, and the youngsters were very excited to have their photo taken while standing in front of the engine. They were even more thrilled when the fire-fighters allowed them to explore the inside as well.

Amon, Elkin and Malachai Cilliers-Fernandes were awed by the big red fire engine.

Community members were spoilt for choice with almost 90 stalls, boasting a variety of food and merchandise. People could also play a round of bingo, participate in the Mr and Miss Hoo Hoo competition, or just relax in the beer garden. The children were also spoilt with a variety of activities to keep them busy, including taking rides on Gareth Strydom’s mobile train.

Leandra said, “Our aim for today was to have a enjoyable, fun day suitable for the whole family.”

Denise Pretorius, the Florida Blockwatch chairperson, was pleased with the community’s support on the day and said, “My motto is simple: ‘A connected neighbourhood is a protected neighbourhood’, and today was the perfect opportunity for neighbours and community members to get to know each other, as well as their local emergency and security personnel, better. I just want to thank everyone who braved the cold and came out to support us, we appreciate it very much. A big thank you must also go to Leandra Real Estates, and all our other sponsors, who ensured the day was a success.”

Mikuan Badenhorst and Heinrich Ehlers were thrilled to be allowed inside the fire engine.
