Only treats – no tricks

The event was attended by more than 300 children – and some adults too

The chilly evening air was filled with excitement, as the many witches, ghouls, ghosts, vampires, fairy princesses, superheroes and clowns got ready to have some fun.

Ryan and Tyla Bezuidenhout could not wait to open their goodie bags.

The Discovery Community Forum’s (DCF) annual Trick or Treat party took place last Saturday (28 October), and everyone – young and old – had buckets of fun (and sweets!)

“This evening is all about good, clean family fun, and who does not love to get loads of sweets? The aim of our trick or treat party is to afford our children the opportunity to roam the streets in a safe and controlled environment, and just enjoy themselves. We are taking the streets back for our community, and with so many negative things happening around us, it is good to be able to remind people of the positive things as well, even if it is for just one night,” said Marion Kelley, the DCF’s public relations officer.

She added that this year, approximately 300 children joined in the fun, and there were even some adults as well, with the oldest one being 77 years old. “We see that every year – we have more and more adults that also dress up and join us, and it is wonderful.

Tay-Leigh Baily rocked the ER24 uniform.

We started this event approximately 10 years ago with 15 children, a little magic show and some sweets. This event grows bigger every year, and that is what we love to see!” she said.

The DCF uses this event to collect lollipops to support Averille Botha’s lollipop drive. “Although this event will always be free, we ask for a lollipop, or a bag of lollipops, as entrance fee, which we give to Averille, who then distributes them to underprivileged children. We use this as a lesson-teaching moment, to teach them that because they will be receiving loads of candy tonight, they should share some too,” Marion said.

Marion said that this event could not be successful without the support from the community, as well as the members from the emergency services, security companies and police, who are always on hand to assist. “On behalf of the DCF, we would just like to thank the members of the community who braved the cold, dressed up and joined us for a night of fun. Thank you for also supporting the lollipop drive. To all our sponsors, members who were part of the trick or treat route, the emergency services, police members as well as security companies, a huge thank you for your support.”

Zunade and Janelle Furmie also joined in the fun.
