Parkies win cricket league

Victory clinched in thrilling final

Florida Park High School’s First cricket team recently achieved an excellent result that resulted in them winning this year’s cricket league.

The team’s final match – a nail-biting affair – was played against Allen Glen High School. After winning the toss, Allen Glen batted first and scored 125 runs in 20 overs with only three wickets falling.

Parkies’ innings did not go as planned, and at one stage they were on 11 runs for the loss of four wickets, with wickets falling on a regular basis. Aqueel Hardien, Nathan Bobraine and Shadewin Gustav helped the innings along by hitting a few boundaries, but with only four overs remaining and two wickets in hand, it looked like all was lost.

But, when Kamogelo Sebate and debutant LeeRoy Burgess (a Grade 8 learner) came together at the crease, the team’s fortunes changed. LeeRoy, who was also selected as the man of the match, hit the winning runs, managing to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat.

“The team was very excited and thrilled when they received the trophy, with their team’s name engraved on it as the league winners. We would also like to thank Eugene Smith and his team at Hoërskool Florida who were umpires during the match,” said Parkies’ representative, Jocelyn Keyter.
