Report quickly and directly – for the animal’s sake

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued a plea to the public to report all animal emergencies directly to their organisation.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has issued a plea to the public to report all animal emergencies directly to their organisation.

With many animal abuse cases in the country, the SPCA is working hard to combat the atrocities committed against animals and is pleading with the public to report all matters to them so that quick action can be taken, not only to rescue the animals, but also to open a case with the police.

The following statement was released.

“Please report cases of animal abuse/ cruelty/ neglect and details of missing pets directly to us. In the interest of the animals and the urgency of assisting them, please do not post reports of this kind on websites or on Facebook. For animal emergencies only, a telephone call to 011 672 0448 puts you in direct contact with staff members. This is an around-the-clock number.

“We ask that reports of missing pets are submitted with full details during working hours and anyone missing a pet should come to the kennels on Nadine Street in Florida, bringing a photograph of the dog or cat (there may be several animals of the same type and/ or breed), to check whether their pet has been admitted. Please do not rely on an Internet message or a Facebook post. So much can go wrong, such as power outages, server problems etc. For these reasons, reports may not be picked up. Time is inevitably lost reaching the animals even if the webmaster is sufficiently alert and caring to notify us.

“If you believe there is an animal emergency of whatever kind – treat it as an emergency and make direct contact with the Roodepoort SPCA on 011 672 0448.

“Email may be fast, modern and convenient but in the case of sending cruelty reports, it is still preferable to call 011 672 0448 and to keep this number on your cellphone.”

The SPCA said further that anonymity is guaranteed.

“’Crimeline’ systems work by reporting matters to the police and attract informants because of the promise of anonymity, but in the case of suffering animals, anonymity is already guaranteed and working through third parties simply extends the length of time before the matter can be solved. Not all websites are read or administered with the regularity that people may think. If people care about animals sufficiently to wish to report a matter to us, then we plead with them that for the sake of the animals, they make their reports directly to us.”
