Local shows off handcrafted woodwork

Florida’s own Robert Bezuidenhout showed off his exquisite wood pieces to members of the public for his triennial exhibition and sale.

Florida’s own Robert ‘Bobby’ Bezuidenhout showed off his exquisite wood pieces to members of the public at his recent exhibition and sale.

With over 75 handcrafted articles to choose from, woodwork lovers were in for a treat with a variety of interesting and unique items available on display. Items included bowls, small clocks, chopping boards and vases.

Robert explains how he got into carpentry and his everlasting love for the artistry.

“I’ve been working for over 60 years doing woodwork. I started in 1957 as an apprentice carpenter. I’ve been in carpentry on and off, and have taught woodwork, and I have also been in the building construction industry, but right now I am retired and this is what I do to keep myself busy.

‘Bobby’, as his friends call him, said he doesn’t have a specific reason for his love of carpentry, but he just can’t get enough of it.

“In all honesty, I can’t sit still and over the years I have built up all these stools because I just can’t stand still. It’s keeping me active and it’s something that I love doing. It’s nice making something, even when I don’t have a clear design in mind when I started. I’m very proud of my work.”

Robert said the exhibition is open to everyone who is interested in purchasing exclusive wood pieces.

“A lot of people who view my work are friends of mine and some of us belong to the Witwatersrand Woodworkers Association. We get together to talk about our projects. We all ‘show and tell’ pieces we have done. I did my first exhibition in 2013 and now again this year. I sold a number of pieces the last time and I am hoping to sell some more this year. I am happy with the current turnout and would like to thank the Roodepoort Record for their help in getting the word out there about my wood items.”

To consult for special orders, Robert is available on 083 873 3872.
