Klinkenberg POI: More bail conditions added in illegal firearms case

Things got heated between the Defence and the State during Theuns Grobler’s illegal possession of firearms case in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.

This comes after the State requested that more bail conditions be added to those already in place. Feisty State Prosecutor, Micci Teshner, told the court that in the light of further investigations into more charges, the State requested that seven more persons be added to the list of people Grobler is not allowed to talk to, as well as the employees of four businesses.

The Defence countered the request, saying that adding the employees to the list is unreasonable as their identities are vague. The Defence added that any of these persons could be incited to make contact with Grobler directly or indirectly without him knowing that he is not allowed to communicate with them, thus trapping him into having his bail revoked. Teshner reponded, saying that the State does not have to reveal the charges they are investigating yet and Grobler could intimidate state witnesses and even potential state witnesses.

After a short break for Magistrate Keith Page to deliberate on the matter, he returned, and said he was granting the State’s request. Page said he could not see how these extra conditions could hamper or infringe on Grobler’s freedom.

Grobler is also a person of interest (POI) in the Robert Klinkenberg murder case. Klinkenberg, who was a well-known lawyer in Roodepoort, was found dead with a bullet to the head on 3 Dec 2015. Initially it was thought he had committed suicide, but later a murder case was opened.
