Shivangi Dance Company celebrates Heritage Day

Dancers wow the crowd in heritage day celebration.

The Shivangi Dance Company’s three senior dancers took to the stage to dazzle the audience for Heritage Day.

The performance took place at Buccleuch Temple, where dancers Aaharya Naidoo (12), Reevaksha Naidoo (16) and Kerisha Naidoo (20) left their audience in awe. The show included Bharatha Natyam, a south Indian classical dance, which takes a number of years to master. The girls have all been training for about six years, putting in all the time and dedication to be star performers.

Head of the company, Ruendhrie Pather-Naidoo, said that the girls were so excited to perform, especially because Mayor Herman Mashaba was in attendance. “It was the first time they performed for a high-profile person,” she said.

The dance company focuses on classical Indian dancing, Bollywood (a more modern version) and what they call ‘fusion’, which takes traditional dances and combines them with music from around the world. “We’ve even danced to the late Miriam Makeba’s music,” Ruendhrie said. She continued, saying that the reason the girls and the company were so happy to perform on Heritage Day is the company’s belief that dancing is universal. It moves beyond people’s differences and unites them. “This is our month to celebrate Hindu festivities as well, so it was a win-win,” she said.

The girls recently competed in the National Eisteddfod Young Performer’s competition in Pretoria for the first time, making it all the way to the finals and winning the open category. They were also awarded their national colours for that achievement.

The dancers will take to the stage again on 7 October at the Gold Reef City Gauteng Diwali Festival to wow the audience once more. Entrance is free with the event running from 9am until late.
