Golden Reef Runners Club held its 40th anniversary celebrations recently. Members past and present came out in their numbers to reminisce days gone by. They dressed up in attire evocative of the era in which the club was established, sporting colourful afros and shirts, and groovy shades. The club was established in 1977 by community members who wanted to get fit, run road races and participate in the Comrades Marathon. They would meet on an open piece of land just off Ontdekkers Road in Horison to do a weekly time trial.

The club marked the milestone with a Hippie Flower Dinner Dance and included a four-course supper, disco, dancing and spot prizes.
John Saunders, one of the first chairmen of the club was invited to the celebrations and he delivered the keynote address.

Bill Brough is one of the founding members of the club and was smiling from cheek to cheek as he greeted old friends during the evening.

“I am absolutely delighted because we have brought old, past and present members, as well as their friends, to the club. Hopefully this will translate into the friends joining our club. Having been a founder member of the club and been with it for 40 years, it has been an absolute privilege to have put the celebrations together. I’m glad about the support I have received,” he said.
