Another success for K9 Unit
Ridding the neighbourhood of drugs - one dealer at a time
A male suspect will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court after being arrested for possession of illicit drugs during a routine stop-and-search operation yesterday (11 September).
“The JMPD officers were conducting the operation along Main Reef Road in Florida, when a suspicious-looking BMW 3-series was pulled over. Upon searching the vehicle they discovered [a quantity of] Nyaope with an approximate street value of R19 000. The suspect was arrested and taken to Florida Police Station, where he was charged with possession and dealing in drugs,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, commended the officers from the K9 Unit, and said, “As officials charged with keeping our residents safe, we will not rest until we rid our streets of drug dealers who destroy communities with their criminal enterprise.” A specialised JMPD K9 Unit was launched in November last year and has had many successful drug busts since then.

Sun added that the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has, during the course of the past year, continually stated that its law enforcement officers will relentlessly pursue drug dealers by using the intelligence at their disposal. “The city remains committed to fighting the crime and drugs plaguing our communities, and will do everything in its power to ensure that criminals cannot rest in Johannesburg and that residents are kept safe,” he said.

It is believed that drugs can often be linked to a variety of social, psychological, financial and health issues that contributes to tearing communities apart and stealing the future of the children.
“That is why the CoJ’s Social Development Department is also working closely with communities through drug awareness campaigns. They are in the process of rolling out drug rehabilitation centres across five regions of the city, with the first one being scheduled for October,” Sun concluded.
