National Read a Book Day
Spend the day with your favourite story on #NationalReadABookDay
What is better than relaxing in a comfortable spot reading your favourite book? If this is something you enjoy doing but always feel guilty about, don’t despair, because today is National Read A Book Day and you are encouraged to grab a book (or two) and spend the day reading.
6 September is National Read A Book Day and, although it might seem similar, it should not be confused with National Booklover’s Day, which was celebrated on 9 August.
Books are inexpensive entertainment, a form of education and act as a time-machine too. Reading a book also encourages readers to use their imagination to picture the characters that form part of the story. Reading has many benefits, including the improvement of memory and concentration, as well as assisting in reducing stress levels.
A slower cognitive decline is shown in older adults who spend time reading and they also tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities during their lifetime.
Here are some quotes about books and reading for you to enjoy:
• “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King
• “No two persons ever read the same book.” – Edmund Wilson
• “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.” – Mason Cooley
• “Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.” – PJ O’Rourke
• “Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book.” – Author Unknown
• “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” – Ernest Hemingway
• “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” – Neil Gaiman
• “You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” – Paul Sweeney
So, celebrate today and sit back, relax and read your favourite book, but don’t keep it to yourself – share the joyful experience! Read aloud to your children, grandparents or even your pets, stuffed animals and plants.
