How to volunteer at the SPCA
There are strict requirements for anyone wishing to volunteer at the SPCA
Ever wanted to become involved at the SPCA as a volunteer, but not sure exactly how or even where to start?
According to the Roodepoort SPCA, there are quite a few ways for animal lovers to become involved and assist at the SPCA. However, individuals wishing to assist by working directly with the animals cannot be permitted to do so unless certain requirements are met.
“If the individual is, for example, a qualified veterinarian or veterinary nurse and fully vaccinated against rabies, he or she can work with the animals. We do not have the manpower to train or oversee volunteer staff in this regard,” said Mandy Cattanach, the manager at the Roodepoort SPCA.

She added that this is for legal reasons as well as health and safety regulations. “This policy includes individuals who are required to undertake community service – even when ordered to do so by the court,” Mandy said.
Mandy said that people with a love for animals who have the skills required by the organisation can be of enormous assistance. “It would be ideal to compile a register of people who are willing to come and assist when the need arises,” she said.
She added that this includes people who can and will be willing to undertake the following tasks, at no cost to the SPCA:
• Welding
• Painting
• Vehicle maintenance and minor repairs
• Panelbeating
• Building
• General handyman work
• Helping out at the thrift shop
• Help with fundraising events (for more information send an email to fundraiser@rdptspca.co.za)
• Gathering support for the organisation by assisting in collecting donations
If anyone is willing and able to undertake any of the above, as and when needed, contact the Roodepoort SPCA on 011 672 0440 or send an email to manager@rdptspca.co.za.
