National Radio Day

Listen to your favourite tunes on #NationalRadioDay

The great invention of the radio is celebrated annually on 20 August, so turn up the volume and listen to your favourite tunes, because today is National Radio Day!

The possibility of wireless communication became clear in the late 19th century, and became a reality when the first radio broadcast took place in the 1920s.

Several inventors played a part in the invention of the radio and the credit for its beginning cannot be given to just one person, as a number of different inventions and discoveries were required to make the radio a reality – including both transmission and reception methods as well as technology.

The first airing of programmes by broadcast stations was in the 1920s and consisted mainly of news and world events. In 1931, two out of five households boasted radio ownership, and by 1938 four out of five households owned a radio.

National Radio Day is a time for communities to celebrate radio and the day’s goal is to strengthen the radio ecosystem by highlighting all kinds of radio – especially local radio stations.

To celebrate National Radio Day, listen to your favourite radio station. Give your local radio personalities some special recognition by listening to their radio shows.

Post a National Radio Day selfie on social media by snapping a pic, tagging your station and adding what you do there (DJ, producer, volunteer, fundraiser) and don’t forget to share using #NationalRadioDay.
