Special recognition for this community worker
Young woman wins prestigious award
A Wilro Park youth was recently awarded The President’s Award (TPA) for Youth Empowerment. Milanca Chanté Pillay received the international award, which is endorsed and initiated by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and President Jacob Zuma.
TPA motivates young people to develop character, discover their purpose and determine their future to contribute towards building a great South Africa. The Award Programme targets 14- to 24-year-olds across the socioeconomic spectrum – from public and private schools, children’s homes, correctional services centres to universities. A global framework for non-formal education has set guiding principles and outcomes for young people.
Milanca was nominated for the award because of her extensive work within the community. Over a six-month period, Milanca has worked closely with non-governmental organisations, businesses and individuals, such as the West Rand Cancer Association, Reach for Recovery, Baby Moses Baby and Child Sanctuary, 94.7 Acts of Kindness, Virgin Active, West Rand Oncology, The Lillian Kur Fund for Senior Citizens, Tekkie Tax, The Relaxation Station, and Lara Bonette Life coaching.
“My community has come together to help me receive international recognition, and I am extremely proud. Getting this award has given me the skills to develop my community and its people. My main focus is the youth as I want to instil leadership skills in them. It does not mean that everyone has to participate in the award, but to basically engage in our community,” she said.
