Caxton employee in five-hour hijacking ordeal
Driver threatened to cooperate.
This past Thursday, 3 August, Caxton West Rand’s trusted long-serving employee, Tebogo Mogorosi, 42, was lucky to escape with his life after falling prey to a hijacking.
Mogorosi was running errands to the Caxton Academy and Industria but first stopped at a motor-spares shop on Luipaard Street to compare prices for a new radiator. He was about to get into the company bakkie at about 8.40am when suddenly a man approached him and shoved a firearm into his side. Another man appeared on the passenger side and they forced him into the vehicle. After assaulting him they ordered him to keep his head down.

Mogorosi heard the passenger phoning someone and instructing the person on the other end to meet them at the rubbish dump behind Bosasa. At the rubbish dump they tied his hands and pulled a beanie over his face. They put Mogorosi into a minivan and again ordered him to lie down. They took him to a house, but at this stage Mogorosi did not know where he was anymore. After being locked up in the house for about five hours they took him to a graveyard in Vosloorus. There they ordered him to lie face down and not to look up for 30 minutes, or else they would shoot him.
After the suspects had left, Mogorosi asked two men who walked past to untie him, but they refused saying they “did not want to get involved”. He then walked to a nearby taxi rank where a taxi driver untied him and lent him his phone to call his employer’s office. Distribution manager Sipho Shongwe went to fetch Mogorosi and took him to the police station to open a case.
“I feared for my life throughout the ordeal. They told me to cooperate, which I did, but I remained scared they would shoot me,” said a visibly shaken Mogorosi.
Police told him that on the same day another business bakkie had been hijacked in the same area.
