National Caviar Day
Enjoy this delicacy with a slice of toast on #NationalCaviarDay
18 July recognises a seafood delicacy with roe on toast, as it is National Caviar Day.
Simply put, caviar is the eggs of the Sturgeon fish. Because there are several different species of this particular fish, the caviar comes in a variety of colours – depending on the species that produced it.
Caviar is filled with loads of vitamins and proteins, making this delicacy a healthy meal to enjoy.
In about 1900, the United States was the leading distributor of caviar, producing more than 600 tonnes a year. However, due to over-harvesting, a ban was put in place to protect the Sturgeon from becoming extinct.
The fish population has not sufficiently recovered since the ban, resulting in caviar’s continued status as a luxury item.
