Woman lured by promise of money
Couple's mumbled prayer had occult undertones.
A resident nearly fell prey to a bizarre scam of which the goal is still uncertain.
A woman was shopping at Sunshine Wholesalers on Albertina Sisulu Road last Thursday when a man and a woman approached her. They told her they had ‘found a large amount of money’ and would share it with her if she went with them. The three then proceeded to an old mine shaft at Durban Deep.

It is here that things took a turn towards the strange. The woman was told that the couple first had to ‘make an offer’. The female scammer then started mumbling a prayer that had ‘occult undertones’. The victim began to panic, but a police patrol coincidentally came across the scene. Although the male scammer managed to flee, his female counterpart was arrested. It is uncertain what their ultimate goal was.
Residents are urged to bear the old adage: “If it seems to be too good to be true …” in mind before falling prey to such stories.
