Local golfers excel

Two local players have been on the rise on the national Sunshine Tour circuit. Riekus Nortje won his maiden Sunshine Tour title with a flawless four-under-par 68 final round of the Mopani Redpath Zambia Open recently. The Eagle Canyon Country Club representative finished with a total 18-under-par. For a player who had not won on the Sunshine Tour before, Riekus said he was quite comfortable in Kitwe and felt no pressure. “Coming down the home stretch I was actually very comfortable hitting the ball. I had no nerves,” he said.

Another Roodepoort golfer, Coert Groenewald was competing in the Zambian tournament. He finished the tournament tied with four other golfers in 33rd position with 1-under-par.

Just a month ago, Coert competed in the Lombard Insurance Classic hosted at the Royal Swazi Spa Country Club. Coert finished the tournament in the first position.

On the Order of Merit list, Riekus is ranked in second place while Coert is in 41st position.

The two players will now be fine-tuning their game to prepare for the upcoming Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament to be held at the Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate later this month.
