CoJ delivers 253 title deeds to Bramfischerville residents.

The initiative forms part of the city's efforts to provide adequate housing and pro-poor development to residents in Roodepoort.

Ululations and whistles reverberated through the Bramfischerville Multi-Purpose Centre in Roodepoort, as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Herman Mashaba, presented title deeds to more than 253 jubilant and ecstatic property owners on Monday, 10 July.

The initiative is part of the new administration’s 10-point plan to fast-track and improve housing delivery within the city.

The Mayor was joined by councillor Mzobanzi Nti from the mayoral committee responsible for housing, as well as the chairperson of the Section 79 Oversight Committee on Housing, councillor Suzanne Clarke. According to Mayor Mashaba, the delivery of “all important documents” to Roodepoort residents is one of the current administration’s efforts to provide the change demanded by the city’s residents.

“We have handed out 253 title deeds for houses, serviced land and flats, to residents in and around Bramfischerville.

I am happy that the provincial government has committed itself to providing an additional R147 million to the city’s housing budget. This will increase the grant to R292 million,” he said.

The Mayor said the CoJ has committed itself to providing meaningful redress to Johannesburg’s poorest residents. This it will do through the provision of dignified home-ownership, and the advancement of pro-poor development programmes which have been designed for this purpose. During the tabling of the 2017/ 18 budget, it was announced that the city had further allocated an operating budget of R152 million to fund the purchasing of buildings within the inner City by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company. These buildings will then be used to provide low-cost housing to 1 164 families.

Apart from the official monies that have been allocated to address the city’s challenges with regards to housing, Mayor Herman Mashaba said an additional R2 million has also been allocated for the construction of homeless shelters throughout Johannesburg.

“Our reality is that the city faces a housing backlog of over 300 000 units. This is the highest number in the country. To progressively deal with this, we have allocated R66 million towards our shift to focus on the ‘Site and Service Housing Development Approach’. This involves the provision of fully serviced plots of land, onto which beneficiaries can be settled,” he concluded.

The CoJ says it will be working tirelessly to ensure that all the issues within the city are addressed.
