Police and Metro Police investigating AK-47 saga

Metro Police say they were unaware of incident.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Nonhlanhla Khumalo, was unaware of the incident that took place in Elm Street on Sunday, 25 June, where ‘funeral-goers’ fired 9mm pistols into the ground and AK-47s into the air.

The police and Metro Police, although on the scene, made no arrests. Khumalo launched an investigation and later told the Record that she found that no case had been opened but that spent 49 AK-47 cartridges were recovered from the scene. She said they would be sent for ballistics testing to see if either the owner could be traced or whether the rifle had been used in other crimes.

Metro Police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane also said she was unaware of the incident, but would investigate it.

West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) told the Record on Monday, 26 June that they had responded to the incident on Sunday and called the Metro Police and police but when they arrived they were told to withdraw. No arrests were made, regardless of the fact that the neighbourhood watch witnessed the shooting and pointed out the vehicle driven by one of the persons armed with an AK-47.
