National French Fry Day

Share some French Fries with your friends on #NationalFrenchFryDay

13 July is National French Fry Day, a day where many people throughout the world will participate in, by enjoying one of the many varieties of this classic food.

French fries are also known as chips, fries, finger chips or French-fried potatoes. They are batons of deep-fried potatoes and are common fixtures at fast food restaurants loved by adults and children alike.

The expression – French fried potatoes – first occurred in English print in the 1856 book by E Warren, titled Cookery for Maids of All Work.

Some people believe that the term – French – was introduced to the potatoes when the American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I. It was here they tasted Belgium fries, and it is suggested they call them French, as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.

French fries are complemented by a wide variety of condiments, including, tomato sauce, ranch dressing, vinegar, mayonnaise, honey mustard, cheese and many more. Sweet potatoes make for a delicious alternate, healthier offering of fries, and can be found on menus globally. Other varieties are baked and come in unusual shapes such as curls, waffles, crinkle and tornado cut.

To celebrate today, share some French fries with your friends and have them seasoned, cut and shape exactly the way you like them!
