Why has Metro Police special unit been withdrawn from Florida?

Members can be deployed anywhere at anytime.

Florida crime-fighting stakeholders have expressed concern about a special Metro Police unit that has recently been withdrawn from the area, regardless of their successes.

Some even make claims that there is a sinister reason behind the move. But according to Metro Police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, there is a perfectly good reason for removing the unit. “What our management does is look at the different regions and identify areas that are experiencing a specific problem that is getting out of hand,” explained Mamonyane.

“In Florida we noticed that drugs, land invasions, riots and corruption were priority problems and put together a unit to address these issues.

But when problems arise in other areas, such as with the taxi strike last week, we have to deploy this manpower to handle that area. Metro Police members are not stationed at specific locations and have to go where they are needed. Although the police are stationed in specific places, they do the same thing. If a big problem arises in an area they call for extra back-up from a different area,” said Mamonyane.

The unit was deployed in April and withdrawn last week.

The Record is in the process of obtaining a report of the unit’s successes and is investigating claims contrary to Momanyane’s answer.
