West Ridge High spreads the warmth

"I feel that we make a big difference with these small gestures, and we will continue to do so,"

Learners and teachers from West Ridge High School spread some warmth at the Floroma Old Aged Home and Frailcare Centre in Roodepoort recently.

“We are involving our learners in charitable projects aimed at building a better future for all,” said Hilde Ebersohn from the school. Simphiwe Ngwenya and Leigh Bangie accompanied two teachers to Floroma, where they delivered blankets to the residents. “The whole school took part in this initiative, and I walked from class to class to collect the money from the learners. Nadine accompanied me to the shop where we bought the blankets we are delivering today,” said Tharina Holloway, one of the teachers.

Leigh Bangie gave a blanket to a delighted Mrs K Engelbrecht.

According to Nadine Beetge, who is also one of the teachers, this is something they do annually at the school, and every term they have another project. “Next term we will be collecting clothing, blankets and non-perishable foods for children’s homes and orphanages, but the hand-over for this will be handled by different learners and teachers, as we try to give everyone a chance to be exposed,” she said.

She added that they do fundraising at the school throughout the year as well, and the money collected will then be donated to a chosen charity. “I feel that we make a big difference with these small gestures, and we will continue to do so,” Nadine said.

Youlanda Fouché, Floroma’s social worker was overjoyed with this donation and thanked the school for their kind gesture. “We appreciate all the help we receive from the community, as it makes the lives of our residents a bit easier and more comfortable, as they only receive a state pension. We have a long wish list of items that we need, and would appreciate any donations,” she said.

They are in need of the following items:

• Crockery (including white hospital type side plates, cups and saucers)

• Spoons (dessert- as well as teaspoons)

• Drinking glasses and one litre glass water jugs

• Industrial roasting oven

• Fresh fruit and vegetables, rice, cake flour, sugar (25 kilogram), yoghurt, coffee and tea

• Zinc and castor oil ointment, aqueous cream, disposable gloves, aspirin, Lactovita, Valoid, Immodium, plasters, Ensure and Lifegain powder, as well as adult nappies.
