Is there a solution?
The informal settlers in Princess are at it again. This time they are taking it a bit far. It is not just about service delivery any more, it’s bigger than that. So many readers have voiced their dismay at how the settlers are conducting themselves. And I have to agree. I may be generalising, but …
The informal settlers in Princess are at it again.
This time they are taking it a bit far. It is not just about service delivery any more, it’s bigger than that.
So many readers have voiced their dismay at how the settlers are conducting themselves. And I have to agree.
I may be generalising, but most of them seem to be illegal immigrants who demand free housing, medical care and education. They steal electricity and then go on the rampage because their electrical supply is taken away. They are squatting on privately owned land – land which, as far as I know, does not belong to the City of Joburg.
Legitimate residents in the vicinity fear for their lives because their houses are being broken into, dogs are being poisoned and their property is being damaged.
Motorists have to be extra vigilant when they use that piece of road for fear of being stoned or hijacked.
The latest stunt was the looting and setting alight of another truck.
Even the police say it is no longer just a protest – it’s criminal behaviour. During the riots two weeks ago, the ‘protesters’ burned down a business, and set fire to a couple of Metrobuses and trucks.
Traffic on Corlett Avenue and other roads has become a nightmare because Albertina Sisulu Road is almost permanently closed off, and drivers have to find alternate routes into and out of Roodepoort.
Where do we go from here? What do we, as law abiding citizens of this country, do?
Years ago, I asked a black friend why protesters feel the need to vandalise buildings when they are rioting. He said they feel it is the only way they will be taken seriously. Really?
Do you think there is a solution to these and other riots? What are your thoughts? Send an email to roelienv@caxton.co.za and air your views.
Until next week, take care of one another.
Ciao
