Simphiwe is Miss African Beauty

Pageant with a cause

With a dream to inspire her peers and girls in the community, Simphiwe Sono was crowned Miss African Beauty. She will now become the official ambassador of the Tshepang Programme for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children.

”I wanted to inspire other girls with my story and portray a positive image of pageant participants. I want to show that you can be different and still succeed,” said Simphiwe.

The Grade 11 Hoërskool Roodepoort learner will assist the orphanage in raising funds to sustain itself. Her goal is to make a difference in the lives of the children. “Competing in the pageant was fun, especially meeting new people and knowing we were supporting a good cause. On the day I was nervous but once I got onto the stage there was no pressure and I enjoyed myself.”

To reach her goal of assisting the orphanage, Simphiwe plans to be a good role model for the young children and support with marketing and ideas to grow and expand its reaches to more vulnerable children.

Her words were echoed by Susan Rammekwa, founder and director of Tshepang. She said she was happy with Simphiwe and her willingness to work with the orphanage and become a role model for the children.

“She is our first pageant ambassador and we will all work together, especially this year where we have planned a lot of events surrounding Tshepang. Simphiwe will work well with the children and help them become confident in themselves,” said Susan.

She added that raising funds is the key to improving the programme.
