Soap Box Derby cancelled
'The money collected from the public would be better spent on community service.'
The much-anticipated return of the iconic Soap Box Derby has been shelved. The event that was historically held at Moths Shellhole beside Florida Lake was scheduled for 12 May.
Roodepoort Lions Club was behind the initiative to see the return of this event. Lions Club fundraising chairperson Ivor Clifford said the event was cancelled due to their inability to secure significant sponsors to stage it.
“We felt this would be an iconic event and a great project for the West Rand. It would put us back on the map and bring the community together again. The club, however, has decided that the money collected from the public would be better spent on community service in this economic climate rather than on a project such as this. We have therefore reluctantly put it on hold for this year and may consider it again next year – if things improve. We wish to thank all those people and companies who have offered the venue, sponsorship and participation.”
The Soap Box Derby was part of the Roodepoort calendar for decades. It was stopped in the 1980s due to increased traffic, the development of the area and meeting the increasingly difficult requirements of health and safety.
