Roodepoort residents off to a shaky start

Stilfontein tremor felt by residents as far afield as Pretoria

For many Roodepoort residents, Monday morning had a shaky start.

Reports have flooded in from residents in Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Randfontein and as far afield as Pretoria of an earthquake that occurred on 3 April at about 5.08am.

According to the US Geological Survey, and earthquaketrack.com, the tremor was caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the quake was eight kilometres from Stilfontein in the North West, at a depth of approximately five kilometres.

Many residents from Roodepoort and surrounding areas took to social media to share their experiences of the tremor:

Rika Meiring said they felt it in Weltevreden Park. A resident from Bergbron, Bianca Marr Fernandes, confirmed that they felt it there too, saying, “Yes I live in Bergbron and I felt it.” Residents in Florida also reported feeling the tremor. Fazeela Sallie said they felt it in Florida and Yaqoob Tarmohammed tagged his friend Zaakirah Rasdien in his Facebook post, saying, “This is possibly what we felt and heard this morning. #RoodepoortFlorida.”

Andrea Joubert said they did not feel anything, “But our pet birds were freaking out in their cages!”

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) said that they will be monitoring the aftermath of the tremor that was felt in parts of the city. Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the EMS said, “At this stage no damages or injuries have been reported. We will be monitoring the situation throughout the day to see if any reports come through.”
