Local para-canoeist Constant Olivier participated in the Gauteng Sprint Championships at Wemmer Pan recently. The Florida Lake Canoe Club member was also selected to represent the Gauteng team at the upcoming South African Sprint Championships taking place at Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu Natal on 8 and 9 April.
Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas said sprints are the main focus of the Olympic Canoeing sport and are respected as an important discipline in local canoeing.
“Paraplegic wheelchair-bound persons often have good upper body strength which comes in handy with a sport using the power of the upper body and arms, while they are at a disadvantage against non-injured participants who are able to use their legs for balance and bracing for additional power,” she added.
