Davidsonville’s West Rand Christian Care Society hosted a breakfast at the Lex MacMillan Hall last weekend. The purpose of the event was to award bursaries to 13 students from Davidsonville who are currently studying at college and university. This is one of the society’s initiatives to give back to the community they have been a part of since 1981.

The society’s chairperson, Quinton Morris, said an amount of over R83 000 had been collected from fundraisers, corporate donations and other initiatives to assist those in need in the area.
“The final amount we collect is divided among the students in a form of a bursary. The money is paid straight into the college or university. The reason we decided to support such an initiative was because we have tried feeding schemes and donating clothes but those are short-term solutions. Giving back with education is long-term and sustainable.”

Since the bursary project began in 1991, the society has amassed over R700 000 in funds for the bursary scheme. It has ensured that students fulfill their dreams of becoming chartered accountants, police officers, lawyers and physiotherapists.
“It is with gratitude to our mighty God that we have managed to help so many young people. But we want to continue supporting the children of Davidsonville so they become successful in the future,” said Quinton.
