Mzansi Spelling Bee calls on applicants from Roodepoort
All schools and children in Roodepoort are invited to register and participate in this year's Spelling Bee challenge.
The Mzansi Spelling Bee calls on children and teens from the Roodepoort area to apply to enter this year’s spelling and literacy challenge.
Now in its sixth year, the competition brings together young minds and literacy enthusiasts from different walks of life in the common interest of spelling and literacy.
The programme was created to enhance and cultivate a culture of reading and spelling among young South Africans. Mzansi Spelling Bee was formed in 2012 by Miyela, a youth-based non-profit organisation (NPO) which partners with families, schools and other stakeholders to cultivate and encourage a society that reads and values education. Mzansi Spelling Bee’s Nomsa Mqhitsane says the programme will be targeting schools and children from Roodepoort in this year’s recruitment drive.

“We want to reach every child and also breach the gap between the schools. We don’t only focus on spelling, we also run clubs for other learners who are not interested in spelling,” she said.
Endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, the Mzansi Spelling Bee will be running activities within the Roodepoort area and at local schools. Parents are urged to get involved in their children’s development by encouraging them to participate and reading with them. Entries are open to children between the ages of nine and 17.
“We would like to nurture the love for spelling and literature among our children. Reading also opens up a new world, new opportunities and allows the learners to be creative,” Nomsa concluded.

The winner of the 2017 Mzansi Spelling Bee will walk away with over R10 000 in gifts and prizes and will also represent South Africa at the 2018 Africa Spelling Bee.
