Roodepoort residents shave and spray for a good cause
Cansa Shavathon well supported at Princess Crossing
The cold and rain could not dampen the spirits of the participants in the annual Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) Shavathon this past weekend.
The parking lot at Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket at Princess Crossing played host to one of the Shavathon events which ran from 9am to 4pm. By 11am about 1 000 participants had been recorded.

The station was manned by members from the Lions Clubs Wilro Park, Melanie Walker – who handled the clippers, and seven teenagers who assisted with the colourful hairspray.

The annual event aims to raise money for cancer patients by inviting anyone to either spray their hair or have it shaved off, for a small donation of R50.
The majority of the Princess Crossing patrons were more than willing to add some funky colours to their hair, but only a few were brave enough to sit in the chair and have their beautiful locks shaved off.

One of the participants, Andrea Erasmus, said that she supported this event on an annual basis. “I am a survivor myself, and have made the participation in the Shavathon an annual tradition,” she said.
Melanie said that she has been volunteering at the Shavathon events for the past 12 years and will continue to do so. “I encourage everyone to participate, even if you only spray your hair. It is for such a good cause,” she said.

Sandy van Heerden, the public relations officer for Wilro Park Lions, said they always support Cansa as it is one of the projects that is very close to their hearts. “We will always assist in these campaigns to help create awareness for this terrible disease. We need every little bit of help we can get in the fight against it,” she concluded.
