PIt was a perfect example of democracy in action when the United Schools of the West Rand (USOW) held a meeting yesterday (22 February). Hosted by Princess High School, the purpose of the meeting was to elect the organisation’s new leadership after their predecessors had gone off to university. USOW is an alliance comprised of various schools in the West Rand such as Hoërskole Die Burger and Adelaar, and Tulip, West Ridge, Princess, Allen Glen, Florida Park and Nic Diedericks High Schools. While last year’s theme was to combat drugs and promote safety, this year, the vision will centre on unity among the schools in the West Rand under the USOW banner.

The organisation has decided to use its growing membership to plan a number of events such as the Bosasa Excursion, Sports Days, commemorating 16 June and charity drives.
“We have been analysing the work our predecessors and are building on what worked for them and tweaking what did not. We want our schools to form a partnership so that the organisation can be a real success. We want to increase productivity this year and be more visible to within our schools and community,” said Princess High’s Khutso Ramethape.
Sicelo Ntuli (West Ridge High) was elected the chairperson of the organisation while Kamvalethu Sikiti will be the deputy chairperson. The treasurer position went to Peter van Staaden (Die Burger), with the role of secretary going to Gift Hlomendlini (Princess High), and Anelisa Petela (Florida Park) will be the deputy secretary. The roles of public relations officer, development officer and head of discipline went to Nomkhosi Maseko (Princess High), Tinyiko Masinje (West Ridge) and Omphemetse Monale (Die Adelaar) respectively. Head of corporate social investment (CSI) went to Tshegofatso Motale (Die Adelaar).

Monitoring the proceedings were the district’s values and health coordinator Neo Segoe-Khupari, and educators from Princess High (Michael Mpubane), West Ridge High (Lebohang Maboee) and Florida Park (Ian Parkin).
