Taxi drivers get violent, traffic comes to standstill
Dorljota to comment later.
Traffic on Ontdekkers Road was brought to a standstill a short while ago today (9 February), when tempers flared among taxi drivers.
Eyewitnesses say taxi drivers pelted each other with rocks and became physical at the stop near the pedestrian traffic light crossing opposite Westgate Shopping Centre. The Police and Metro Police had to interfere to restore order and the traffic flowed again.
It is uncertain what led to the spat but there have been rumours lately that a feud is brewing between taxi drivers. The Dobsonville Roodepoort Leratong Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota) spokesperson, Zeblon Simelane, was on the scene to hear the drivers’ grievances and play peacemaker. He said it was too early to say what the cause was but that the Record should contact him at about 5pm.
