Encouraging visit for injured firefighters

Mayor and MMC for Public Safety visited injured firefighters in hospital

The four firefighters who were involved in the accident on the corner of Wilgerood and Christiaan de Wet Roads on 31 January received a surprise visit from the Executive Mayor and the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety.

They sustained injuries when the fire truck they were travelling in overturned and landed on top of another vehicle.

According to the MMC, councillor Michael Sun, it is believed that the firetruck could have experienced a mechanical malfunction, and the cause of the accident would be investigated.

Five motorists were also injured during this accident and taken to various hospitals for treatment. The injured firefighters from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) were taken to Millpark Hospital.

“I reported the incident to Mayor Herman Mashaba immediately after hearing the news. He accompanied me to the hospital to meet with the firefighters and wish them a speedy recovery,” Sun said.

Sun also said that they were happy to report that the firefighters did not sustain any serious injuries and that all of the injured motorists were treated for minor to medium injuries. “No fatalities have been reported,” he said.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for EMS said they were encouraged by this visit. “It is encouraging to see that the leadership made the effort to visit these injured firefighters in the hospital. It gave them a sense of appreciation to know their hard work and service to citizens of the city is being noticed. We see it as an acknowledgement of the risks they take daily while on duty and it will spur them on to keep up with the good work they are doing,” he said.

Sun concluded by saying, “I will be contacting each of the injured motorists to enquire if myself and mayor Mashaba could meet with them to wish them all a speedy recovery.”
