Goose rescue attempt on its way

It is unclear when their rescue attempts will resume.

An attempt to rescue a gander that has weakened considerably due to the fact that his legs are entangled in fishing gut, was made yesterday (30 January) afternoon.

At about 11am and in pouring rain the director of Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw), Taren Welthagen and veteran animal activist Cora Baily started trying to lure the gander down from a lamp post at Florida Lake. It is uncertain for how long he was perched on the lamp post but it was clear that he was weakening.

Though the gander could still fly, he could barely walk, meaning he could not help the goose to care for their family of nine goslings. Geese mate for life and both parents have to raise the goslings, Taren explained.

Claw director Taren Welthagen first had to get the other geese away from the scene.

The couple of activists eventually managed to lure the gander down with maize but it kept flying away. Due to fading daylight they had to abandon their mission at about 6.30pm.

“There are hundreds of these cases in a year and that is the ones we know of. There are some compassionate anglers and residents who also try to save them. It is mostly to blame on careless anglers who leave fishing gut and hooks behind,” said Taren.

It is unclear when their rescue attempts will resume.
