Photos: Two speedsters cause accident injuring five in Florida
"The speeding on this road is out of control"
Two alleged speedsters caused an accident in which a third vehicle was damaged and five people injured on Albertina Sisulu Road in the early morning hours of Monday (19 December).
Collette Bruwer, a resident of the flats above the Apple Bite Roadhouse, related the details of the incident to the Record. She and her husband arrived at home at about 12.20am when they heard a speeding vehicle and then the screeching of brakes. She rushed down to find that a vehicle, that was travelling from Florida Lake towards Maraisburg had gone over the pavement, crashed into a pawnshop and then rolled.
A vehicle occupied by three men then stopped to assist the occupants of the rolled vehicle. While they attended to the injured, a bakkie coming from Maraisburg and allegedly also speeding, crashed into the good Samaritans’ vehicle regardless of the fact that its hazard lights were on. The driver of the bakkie allegedly fled the scene, leaving his injured passenger and vehicle behind.
When the first vehicle crashed into the pawnshop, it also hit the trolleys of three informal recyclers who were sleeping next to the shop. One of the trolleys seriously injured one of the recyclers. He, along with the passenger in the bakkie, and the three occupants of the rolled vehicle had to be taken to hospital, suffering from various degrees of injuries.
“The speeding on this road is out of control,” said Bruwer. “Every weekend there are accidents here”.
