Tornado Old Age Home was the first stop the Roodepoort Record made to deliver the contributions the public made to the Ou Toppie Project. The Record team also made deliveries to Donovan McDonald and Ons Huis Old Age Homes in the company of councillors Willie van der Schyf and Caleb Finn, and Dorcas Aid who assisted the project by finding the homes where the male senior citizens needed to be pampered. The project, which was launched in October, had community members donating hygiene bags filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorants, razor blades and disposable blades, face cloths and ear buds. The ou toppies were clearly elated at the arrival of the deliveries and were grateful to the community and all those who played a role in making sure the men are not forgotten.
Johann Cruywagen, who is 68 years old, and will be spending his Christmas Day with his son and family, said, “The project was a fantastic idea and it’s nice to know there are people in the community who care. I grew up here in Florida so I’m a real native of this area”. His sentiments were echoed by Igsaan Faakier who is just a year younger than Cruywagen and said he is happy to know that there are people who are thinking of him and the other senior citizens.
“Big or small, we appreciate every gift, because we understand that people work hard and may not be able to assist us all the time. So this gesture from the community is great,” he said.
