National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day
Make room for holiday leftovers on #NationalCleanOutYourRefrigeratorDay
Get ready with a bucket filled with soapy hot water and disinfectant, a sponge and a garbage bag, because 15 November is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.
The timing of this day is perfect as the holiday season is drawing near, and you need to make room for all the anticipated leftovers. Although this job may be dreaded by many, it is an important task nonetheless.
Cleaning the refrigerator is an often neglected task because of our hectically busy lifestyles, thus the creation of this day. We tend to push things already in the refrigerator to the back as we put in new food – and then forget about the older items. This usually leads to a surprise or two being found at the back of the shelves.
National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day was created by Whirpool Appliances’ home economists in 1999 to encourage people to clean out their refrigerators in advance of the upcoming holidays. The company even had a toll-free hotline offering cleaning tips.
To celebrate today, here are some suggestions for cleaning your refrigerator:
– Empty each shelf, and remove them from the fridge
– Wipe down the inside of the refrigerator entirely
– Wash the drawers – their undersides too.
– Wash the shelves
– Throw away all expired and/ or mouldy items – if you do not use it anymore, throw it away
– Vacuum the condenser coils behind the fridge, and the floor under it
– Restock the shelves with good fresh food
– Enjoy your clean and organised refrigerator.
