With the abundance of fresh apples, oranges and seasonal fruit available at Food Lover’s Market, creating a fresh and flavourful summer drink is easy.

Charles Finlay, store manager at Food Lover’s Market Westgate suggests sangria.

The Spanish punch is perfect for long summery days and can be enjoyed with an assortment of fruit. It can be served as an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink.

Non-alcoholic sangria

Ingredients

2 cinnamon sticks

1/2 cup sugar

3 cups of pomegranate juice

1 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice

1 medium orange, sliced into thin rounds

1 medium lemon, sliced into thin rounds

1 medium lime, sliced into thin rounds

1 medium apple, cored and cut into 1/2 chunks

3 cups of soda or sparkling water

In a large jug combine, cinnamon sticks, pomegranate juice, orange juice, orange, lemon, lime, and apple. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and preferably overnight to allow fruit flavours to infuse.

Before serving, stir in soda or sparkling water and serve in a glass over ice.

* Alcohol is optional – the traditional recipe consists of red wine, which can be substituted with pomegranate juice.
