National Apple Dumpling Day

Revisit the smells of your childhood and celebrate #NationalAppleDumplingDay

National Apple Dumpling Day is observed annually on 17 September.

This dish originated in the colder European climates of England, Bavaria and Austria and was seen as a humble peasant dish, but has crossed the Atlantic to spread its sweet smell in the New World.

It has become an internationally loved treat over the centuries and can be found in many a grandmother’s cookbook – and is certainly worthy of its own day of celebration.

Apple dumplings are delicious filled pastries, typically made by putting whole peeled, cored apples on a piece of dough. They’re then sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and the dough folded over the apple to form a parcel-like dumpling, and oven-baked till tender. They’re believed to be a native dish from the northeastern United States, especially the area around Pennsylvania.

Apple dumplings are popular in Amish circles, and are frequently eaten as breakfast. But they can also be enjoyed as a dessert and are sometimes served with ice-cream.

Celebrate by going back to your childhood and serve this rustic treat with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or drenched in a decadent caramel sauce.

You can also enjoy some delicious apple dumplings while you are watching the 1975 Walt Disney movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang.

Find a yummy recipe to make some apple dumplings with a difference and enjoy it for breakfast, a snack or dessert!
