Plot goes up in flames

No-one injured in fire

At about 3:30pm on 9 August, a dark cloud of smoke could be seen hanging in the air.

It came from a fire raging on a property situated on the corner of Chaucer Avenue and Vermooten Road.

It is unclear exactly how the fire started. The owner of the property, Fanie Maritz, said he saw two or three young people loitering near his property. “I chased them away and as they were running off, I noticed that a fire had been started. Two or three weeks ago the field across the road was also set alight,” said Maritz.

According to Maritz, a number of tyres on the property were set alight and the fire spread from there. Fortunately, nobody was injured and no buildings were damaged.

The fire department, together with some members of the public were quickly on scene to bring the fire under control.

According to a person on scene, the City of Joburg’s (CoJ) fire department did not have a fire truck available, and the truck responding from Florida did not have any water. He said the fire truck that was on scene was from Roosevelt Park.

The CoJ’s fire truck arrived at about 4.30pm and assisted in extinguishing the fire.
