Video: DA accused of stealing electricity

City Power acting director disagrees with DA.

The elections might be over but the war continues.

Rudy du Plooy was recently accused by his arch enemy, DA councillor Gert Niemand, of having put up election posters illegally prior to the election. Meanwhile the elections came and went and Du Plooy lost to Niemand. Now Du Plooy is accusing Niemand (and the DA) of electricity theft.

On a video clip it can be seen how an extension cord is plugged into a socket on a lamppost at the corner of Anstruther Street and Struben Avenue. The cord leads to the DA’s tent outside a voting station.

Niemand denied the accusation, saying it is not an illegal connection and that they merely used a plug point to supply their laptops and computers with power. He said this accusation is just part of Du Plooy’s vendetta against him and the DA.

But City Power disagrees. According to acting Managing Director, Sicelo Xulu, this was indeed an illegal connection to the power grid and for any such temporary connection special permission has to be obtained. City Power Region C Depot manager, Noel Maso agreed, saying it was an illegal connection even if no wires were damaged and the cord was only plugged in.
