City of Johannesburg a hung council
No party achieved a 50 per cent majority in CoJ metro – what does this mean?
The Municipal elections have been completed, the votes have been tallied and the results announced.
The ANC remains the ruling party by securing 53,9 per cent of the votes, followed by the DA with 26,89 per cent and the EFF with eight per cent.
The City of Johannesburg was one of the hotly contested metros with the ANC and the DA being head to head on the number of votes throughout the counting process. The final results revealed that the ANC secured 44,64 per cent of the votes just ahead of the DA with 38,44 per cent. The EFF was the strongest contender among the other parties contesting the elections and secured 10,94 per cent of the votes.
The City of Johannesburg is a hung council as no party achieved an outright majority of 50 per cent or more of the votes. This means the municipality will be run by a coalition, with the coalition parties having to work together to make decisions regarding municipal issues.
The ANC won 121 seats consisting of 84 ward and 37 proporsional representation (PR) seats. The DA won 104 seats consisting of 51 ward and 53 PR seats.
The EFF won 30 PR seats, the IFP five PR seats while the FF Plus, Aljama, UDM, ACDP, Copee and the PA all won one seat each. A proportional representation seat is the amount of seats a political party receives in proportion to the percentage of votes they secured in an election.
Other national results were a mixed bag with only four major metros achieving an outright majority.
In Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape the ANC achieved a majority with 59,86 per cent of the votes. The DA received 23,45 per cent and the EFF eight per cent.
In the City of Cape Town the DA secured a majority with 66,75 per cent of the votes. The ANC got 24,52 per cent and the EFF three per cent.
Ekurhuleni Municipality is a hung council. The ANC received 48,84 per cent, the DA 34,13 per cent and EFF 11,10 per cent of the votes.
In Manguang in Bloemfontein the ANC achieved a majority with 56,77 per cent of the votes.The DA received 26,20 per cent and the EFF eight per cent.
Nelson Mandela Bay local municipality is a hung council with the DA receiving 46,66 per cent, the ANC 41,50 per cent and the EFF four per cent of the votes.
The City of Tshwane is a hung council with the ANC receiving 43,10 per cent, the DA 41,48 per cent and EFF 11,64 per cent.
The ANC took the eThekwini metro in KwaZulu-Natal with an outright majority with 56,01 per cent of the votes and 126 seats‚ compared with the DA’s 26,92 per cent and 61 seats. The IFP took 4,2 per cent of the vote and 10 seats.
