Deputy Minister of Police, Maggie Sotyu, visited Roodepoort earlier this week.
Sotyu was invited to the Roodepoort region by ANC Zone 5 Leadership, led by chairperson Phosane Mgqibisa. She paid a surprise visit to the Roodepoort Police Station, visited a number of crime hotspots and later met with the Community Policing Forums, Block Watch and residents.
At the police station, officers outlined the criminal activities in the area. These include illegal mining in Ward 127, drug abuse, house robberies and high rates of rape and murder.
Sotyu also raised the issue of police allegedly taking bribes from the community. The community alleged that the police harass people in Roodepoort and residents are unlawfully arrested for walking in the streets at night. Residents also told the Sotyu that the community of Davidsonville handed a memorandum to the Police in March about drug dealers and drug activities in the area, but nothing has been done to stem the tide of drugs in the area.
Sotyu said South African Police Service is in the process of implementing the Transformation Task Team, which is aimed at transforming the police force. She assured the community their grievances have been heard and will be assisting in tackling their issues.
