Last opportunity for special vote application
Special voting will take place on 1 and 2 August.
This is the last chance for residents to register for special votes for the 2016 municipal elections – registrations have to be in by Friday 8 July.
Special votes are available to all registered voters who are disabled, infirm or pregnant, as well as to members of security forces, election officials and the media or any other voters who are unable to visit their voting station on Election Day, 3 August.
There are two types of special votes: home visits and special voting at your voting station.
Home visits occur when election officials visit your place of residence in order for you to cast your ballot. This type of special vote is only available to the disabled, infirm and pregnant.
Special voting at your voting station is open to all other special voters who cannot visit their voting station on Election Day.
Special voting will take place on 1 and 2 August.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has received over 285 000 applications for special votes. 30 per cent of these are home visits.
Special votes may only be cast by those who have applied for and received approval from the IEC.
Applications are available online at www.elections.org.za, via SMS by sending your ID number to 32249 (no home visits are applicable and SMSes cost R1), or through physical submission by filling an MEC35 form and hand-delivering it to your local IEC office.
Although forms must be hand-delivered, they can be delivered on your behalf by someone else.
