Lions vs SWD Eagles in Roodepoort
This Currie Cup match will be played in your backyard
It is just a month until the Golden Lions Rugby Club touch down in Roodepoort to face off against South Western District (SWD) Eagles in a Currie Cup match on 16 July. The hosts will be the Roodepoort Rugby Club, as part of the decision by the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) to take the sport back to its stakeholders, including Alberton, Pirates and Diggers Rugby Clubs. This decision was made earlier this year by GLRU CEO and former Springbok number eight, Rudolf Straeuli. A tender process was followed and the GLRU carried out a due diligence audit, after which five clubs were granted the rights to each host a Currie Cup match.
“The Currie Cup games will be hosted at some of our premium clubs that have tendered for these matches and I know it is going to be an enormous success and assist them with their future projects,” said Straeuli.
Roodepoort Rugby Club, which recently moved to Hoërskool Roodepoort, will host the last pool match.
As soon as the announcement was made, the club set to work, getting everything in place before the match, and liasing with different departments in Roodepoort to put the event together.
To make sure the school’s grounds are in immaculate condition, the club, with the help of some local businesses, brought in some of the specialised equipment used at Emirates Stadium to ensure the field is of international standard. The dressing rooms have been upgraded to provide a comfortable and secure area for the players to take a breather before, during and after the match.
“When we formed our partnership with the school, our main focus was for them to benefit from everything we did for the club. The field will now be of amazing standard and so will the rest of the facilities at the school. There will be ample secure parking, both at the school and in other demarcated areas,” said Dennis Armstrong, President: Commercial, Roodepoort Rugby Club.
“It has not been an easy road but we are thoroughly prepared. We had to get approval from various agencies such as the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, the local municipality, its councillors, and the Joint Operations Committee (JOC), because it takes a team to make sure an event of this magnitude goes off without any major glitches,” he sad.
The West Rand community is encouraged to turn out en masse to support this historic event. A number of current and former Springboks and Blitsbokke will be making appearances at the game. Fans will also be able to have a meet and greet with the Lions players, and have their photos taken with the Currie Cup. If that is not enough to persuade fans to come and watch the game live, there will be big screens situated at the field, broadcasting the Super Rugby matches being played. The Roodepoort Rugby Club’s first team will also be in action after the Lions take on the SWD Eagles.
Entrance to the games has been set at a standard rate of R20 per vehicle, while walk-ins will need to pay R10 each. Season-ticket holders will have free entrance to all these matches. There will be VIP facilities, bar facilities, food stalls and a children’s play area. Main pavilion seating (family zone) will cost R30, while the cordoned-off VIP Bar-service Zone will set you back R300. The R300 includes lunch, snacks and a R100 drinks voucher (additional drinks from the cash bar).
Tickets are now on sale at the Hoërskool Roodepoort and the Roodepoort Rugby Club Office.
