JRA have school safety at heart

Many schools on the receiving end of traffic calming measures to enhance the safety of its pupils.

Two of Roodepoort’s schools are benefitting from the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA’s) bid to improve the safety of pupils and encourage positive driver behaviour at Johannesburg schools.

Traffic calming measures are to be implemented at over 30 schools across Johannesburg, of which the implementation at thirteen schools, including Laerskool Gustav Preller Primary, had already been completed.

“We are concerned about the number of children that are knocked down, injured or killed by speeding vehicles and the JRA is implementing measures to avoid tragic accidents in future,” JRA acting MD, Mpho Kau, in a press statement said.

“Traffic calming measures are a necessity at schools as they force drivers to slow down,” he added.

Kau identified high visibility speed humps and signs as the best way to indicate to drivers to reduce their speed in the direct vicinity of a school. The engineering solution is accompanied by road signs by which motorists are alerted about the speed hump ahead, which should caution them to slow down. In other cases, the JRA might install raised pedestrian crossings or other calming measures.

Schools in Jeppestown, Kensington, Randburg and Johannesburg CBD have already been introduced to these measures. Next on the list for implementation are schools in Midrand, different parts of Soweto and Nkone Maruping Primary School in Bramfischerville.
