I would just like to respond regarding the article in yesterday’s paper about Galena Avenue. We also live on Galena, close to this 90 degree bend and find it quite stressful in many ways. The problem however stems from motorists speeding down Crous Drive, jumping the stop street on the Cnr of Crous and Banket and then not been able to make the turn. I agree that speed bumps on Galena will not solve this problem. In my opinion Crous drive needs to have the speed bumps to slow the motorists down before reaching the stop street. Alternatively Galena must be closed off at Banket drive which will force the motorists to use Ruhamah and Wilgerood.

Our entrance is in Banket and the amount of times that our family have nearly been taken out at this Crous/ Galena/ Banket intersection due to motorists jumping the stop street is ludicrous. I think speed bumps on Banket Drive would also help to stop motorists speeding up and down from Ruhamah.

However, none of this will really help as it is up to each and every motorist to abide by the traffic rules and be aware of road markings and signage. I have found that we South Africans are extremely aggressive on the road and focus purely on our own needs. We want to get to our destinations quicker instead of leaving a few minutes earlier. Drinking and driving have become the norm because the rules in SA are not strict enough. They youngsters think they are invincible when they get behind the wheel of a car.

People, solving the carnage on our roads starts with you! The rules are in place for a reason so obey them….. stop speeding……. Stop drinking and driving…….. keep stress at bay and relieve road rage. The only person you are hurting is yourself and most often other innocent people, so take it easy.
